A Devotion
Crying Wolf By: Ariel Gant
Yet I hold this against you: you have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will remove your lamp stand from its place. (Revelation 2:4-6) NIV Sometimes, like a young child who is so easily distracted, I let the world catch my attention. And once I've taken my eyes off our Lord, no matter how briefly, it becomes quite a struggle to return. But unfortunately, by the time God brings me to my knees and I realize how empty this world is, I forget how tender and forgiving our loving heavenly Father is. I develop a fear that He'll be angry with me for continually promising to love and serve Him with all my heart, then allowing Satan to so easily pull me away. It reminds me a lot of the little boy who cried wolf. Intending to fool the shepherds, he'd run and tell them wolves were after the sheep. After running to the rescue, the shepherds would discover the boy had lied, again, and left them looking foolish. I often feel like God thinks I'm crying wolf. That I say I'm returning whole-heartedly to receive His love and protection, only to turn around and run off again. Thankfully God knows our hearts. He realizes how easily Satan can trip us up when we're not on our guards. And each time we return, like the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), God welcomes you back with open arms, overwhelmed with joy at the thought of being able to hold you in His arms once again. He has no doubts of your sincerity; He doesn't hold back His trust as we often would. He's simply overjoyed to have you back, because you're all He truly wants. Not your works, your service, or your sacrifice, just YOU. . |
